Shanice Clark was
discovered unresponsive in her dormitory at about 3am on Sunday at California
University of Pennsylvania.
A college basketball player
who was found dead over the weekend probably inhaled chewing gum into her lungs
while asleep, according to a coroner.
The 21-year-old's death
appeared to be accidental, according to a preliminary report from medical
personnel cited by police.
Official say Ms Clark, who
was from Toronto, Canada, "aspirated" the gum while sleeping.
The university in
California, Pennsylvania, said it was "deeply saddened" by the death
of the 6ft senior basketball player, who played on its Vulcans team.
The college's athletic
director, Dr Karen Hjerpe, said in a statement: "Our heartfelt sympathy
goes out to the family and friends of Shanice Clark.
"Shanice was a bright
student and talented player. Her smile and personality will be missed."
A post-mortem examination
was conducted on Monday.
