Hundreds of people on Saturday thronged Okrika, Rivers State, to attend the burial of Pa Desetima Nyingierefaka, the grandfather to the First Lady, Patience Jonathan.
The people came in large groups from neighbouring towns, villages and local governments to catch a glimpse of the president’s wife.
Aside the banners of the first lady, that of late Mr. Nyingierefaka was seen at every corner of the town and many shop owners wrote words of welcome on cardboard papers and stuck them on their shop windows.
Reverend Ndukwe Ukonu, who preached at the burial, read John 11:20-27 from the Bible where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead and urged everyone gathered to turn to God.
Mr. Ukonu said that the lesson in John’s action was that, “no one knows the time or hour of death”.
Earlier, Mrs. Jonathan was at the lying-in-state of Mr. Nyingierefaka who died at the age 92, before taking a tour of some project sites in the community. She also paid a courtesy visit on the Amayanabo of Ogoloma, Emmanuel Ibiagolika, in his palace where she intimated the Amayanabo of the developments in the community.
The first lady assured the traditional ruler that the reconstruction of bridge from Okrika to Borokiri in Port Harcourt was ongoing. She also told him that more than 70 hectares of sand filling and land reclamation in various parts of the community were at various stages of completion.
The king thanked the president’s wife for her presence in the area and for facilitating works on the projects.
The first lady met with chiefs in the community who lauded her efforts in raising the standard of living of women and children in the country.
