Police Accidentally Shoot Bystanders

According to Skynews, police at a New York bus station accidentally
shot two female bystanders while trying to subdue an apparently emotionally disturbed man.

It is believed the accident happened after a witness shouted "He’s got a gun!", causing the officers to draw their weapons and let off three shots.
The first woman was hit in the leg sending her sprawling to the ground while still clutching a four-wheeled walking aid while the second victim was hit in the buttocks, police said.

Both women are recovering in hospital and the man has been arrested.
It all began when a man was seen to run into traffic at the junction of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.
"It was like he wanted to get hit," a witness told the New York Post.
"First he got hit by a black truck, and then he got up and was clipped by another car," said Fabiola Ferere.

"The police literally could not control him. He had to be on something, like narcotics or bath salts," added Ferere.
"The cops were shouting 'Stop! Stop! Stop!'" said another witness, Hannah Atea.
The 35-year-old man police were aiming for had 'simulated' a gun with his hands, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
Police have yet to release the name of the arrested man or the two victims, who are aged 54 and 35.

The shooting is the second time in a year bystanders in New York have become caught up in a police shooting.
In 2012 nine pedestrians were wounded by police gunfire, ricochets and fragments after officers engaged in a gunfight outside the Empire State building with a man suspected of shooting one of his co-workers.

One of the bystanders in that incident is taking legal action against the New York police department.
