The New York Fire Department said the girl fell from the lobby of the building in Soho, Manhattan, plunging down three floors.
Fire department spokesman Khalid Baylor told The New York Times that rescue teams pried open the elevator doors in the sub-basement.
He said she was then rolled onto a backboard and lifted up the inside of the shaft in a basket.
Medical teams examined the girl at the scene before she was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.

The girl, whose name has not yet been released, is being treated at the Bellevue Hospital Center.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, amid reports that the lift was out of service at the time of the accident.
It is not clear whether the girl was a resident in the building.
