Retired Magistrate Killed By Guard

A guard, identified simply as David, on Friday, killed a 65-year-old retired magistrate, Mrs Olufunmilayo Timeyin, at Laderin Workers Estate, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The development came barely 48 hours after a police corporal, Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi, killed six people and thereafter took his own life in the state capital.
Saturday Tribune learnt that the guard had been employed by the retired senior magistrate less than two months ago, but was soon relieved of his job for allegedly stealing jewellery, electronics and mobile phones.
The suspect’s mission to the premises of the Timeyins, it was gathered, was to demand money after he regained freedom from police custody.
He reportedly gained entry into the premises at about 3.30 p.m. by scaling the fence, deactivated all security systems and then hid himself in a corner of the house.
The unsuspecting retired magistrate, who had returned from a social outing and parked her blue Toyota Camry car with registration number: LAGOS KJA 141 BU, was said to be settling in the house when her former employee pounced on her and slaughtered her.
As David was carrying out the act, it was learnt that one of the deceased’s children, identified as Olumide, who was at the gate trying to gain entry, raised the alarm but David had killed his mother and fled into a nearby bush before people got to the scene.
However, a member of a vigilance group, Oluseye Fasina, was said captured the fleeing suspect, who was promptly handed over to the police.
Eminent personalities, including the state Chief Judge, Justice Olatokunbo Olopade and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Muyiwa Oladipo, were sighted at the scene.
As of the time of this report, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached for comments, but policemen from Kenta Division were at the scene.
Meanwhile, the police in the state have commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the action of a corporal, Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi, who killed six people, including his wife, and then took his own life.
Ogunbiyi had killed the mother of his two children, a landlady and her four children and a commercial motorcycle rider, on Thursday, at Obantoko area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
The command’s spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, told Saturday Tribune, on Friday, that investigation into the incident had begun on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye.
Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said some people living around the area had been invited to assist the police in their investigation.
He added that an Assistant Commissioner of Police had been directed to submit the report of the investigation within 24 hours to the commissioner.
“Investigation into the killing of six people by Corporal Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi has commenced on the directive of the CP. The investigating team is led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police and the report of the investigation must get to the CP’s table within the next 24 hours.
“The command is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that justice is done. We hereby urge any member of the public who have any useful information on this ugly development to come to the command headquarters, so as to assist us in the course of the investigation,” Adejobi said.
