Kamryn Renfro's tribute - which she said "was the right thing to do" - was given the go-ahead by her parents.
But she was shocked when her school, Caprock Academy in Grand Junction, Colorado, sent her home.
She has since been allowed back following national news coverage, and the school has launched an investigation into the decision.

"It made me feel like I'm very special and I'm not alone," Delaney said.
Her mum Wendy Campbell added: "For a little girl to be really brave and want to shave her head in support of her friend, I thought that was a huge statement and it builds character in a child."
