United Nations Vowed To Block Terrorist Funding

The United Nations has vowed to block all avenues of terrorism funding across the globe.
This came on the heels of the concern raised by President Goodluck Jonathan that Boko Haram is financed by forces outside Nigeria.

United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, during the just concluded African Union Conference of Ministers of Finance, Economic and Planning, said the United Nations will, however, not go to individual countries to control arms, noting that it was within the powers of the countries to fight terrorism domestically.
He decried the killing of young children in Nigerian schools and said Nigeria should devise a comprehensive approach to deal with the menace.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General also said the meeting had been able to deliberate on infrastructure, job creation and unemployment in the continent, adding that the economies of African continent had been growing at 6 per cent per year.
He said this fugure compared with many developed economies, saying Africa was a continent of hope.

Earlier, ECA executive secretary, Mr Carlos Lopes, had said that emerging economies had seen Africa as major trading partners and place of huge investment.
“Transformative changes in Africa are taking place at the same time as the global landscape and global dynamics are shifting. Emerging economies have become major trading partners with Africa and have become sources of substantial investment. Moreover, as the rest of the world gets older, Africa is getting younger and more populous, with implications for education and health care, for supply of labour, and for consumer demand,” he said.

According to him, “these are positive trends, but there is still much to be done. Aggregate growth is below the 7 per cent threshold required to double the income in a decade. Even at this rate, African economies would be unable to generate enough jobs.”
