Witnesses say the man pulled a small axe from a rucksack before charging at the officers at around 2pm on Thursday in a busy shopping district of Queens.
Police shot the attacker
dead on a street in Queens, New York
One of the officers
suffered a serious head wound in the attack.
Investigators are still
trying to discover the attacker's identity and what could have been a motive
for the attack, but Police Commissioner William Bratton said all options were
open.
Asked specifically about
terrorism, he said: "This early on, we really cannot say yes or no to that
question."
Police said CCTV footage
and witness reports appeared to leave no doubt that the man purposely targeted
the four recently-appointed New York Police Department officers.
One of the officers was
forced to block the man's axe with his arm.
Police then fired several
shots at the man, killing him and injuring a female bystander.
The officer who was hit in
the head is said to be in a critical condition and due to undergo surgery.
The injured woman was also
taken to hospital with a wound to her back.
