Tragedy
struck in Anambra state following the death of a 17-year-old senior secondary
school prefect, who slumped and died after he was punched by a junior student
wearing a mysterious ring.
The Anambra
State Police Command is investigating the death of the deceased prefect, an SS3
student of Modebe Secondary School, Onitsha, whose name was given as
Chukwuebuka Okanume.
Apparently the
deceased had queried the SS1 student, for dressing shabbily, which led to a
heated argument after he told that prefect he was no longer a student of the
school and had just come for his transfer certificate to Asaba, Delta State
capital.
The senior
prefect slapped the student believed to be wearing a charmed ring, who was said
to have in turn reacted with a punch which reportedly led to the deceased
slumping.
He was
however, rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead. It was
gathered that the mother of the late school prefect begged the accused to
revive her son back but it proved abortive.
It was
gathered that the suspect, who was arrested by the police, is believed to be a
member of an occult group that used rings as charms, called Etiada (hit and
fall) to defend themselves when attacked.
The source
said that the junior student was now being interrogated by men of the Special
Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, to ascertain the source of the ring. The principal of the school, Mr. Ralph
Machie, declined further comments.
Meanwhile the
state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Uche Ezeh, who confirmed the
incident, said investigation was ongoing.
