However, the housemaid, identified as Jolly Tumuhiirwe, pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness when she appeared before a City Hall Court saying she was regretting her actions.
The remorseful Tumuhiirwe
later apologised to the parents of the baby (of 18 months), the court, country
and people across the world who were severely affected by her actions.
The clip of Tumuhiirwe
beating the baby for not eating quickly enough went viral and caused an-uproar
on social media.
Jolly Tumuhirwe was seen
striking baby Arnella Kamanzi during her feeding. Tumuhirwe then throws the
child to the ground after she vomits the food.
Tumuhirwe then beats the
baby with a torch, and also kicks her in the head and stamps on her torso,
before the recording ends. The video has been viewed almost 80,000 times on
YouTube.
The maid was originally
charged with torture, but police spokesman Fred Enanga has since confirmed that
charge has been changed to attempted murder, reported Monitor.
“The charge against her has
been amended to attempted murder upon re-perusal by the Resident State Attorney
and the pending lines of inquiry in advanced stages,” Enanga said.
Tumuhiirwe has been
remanded in prison at Luzira where she awaits sentencing on Wednesday.
Justice Moses Nabende
presided over the case.
The prosecution team led by
Jane Akuo Kajuga announced that they preferred new charges of attempted murder
against the housemaid.
Life in imprisonment straight up. Is just too much.
