Brooke Baures "sustained fatal crushing injuries to her brainstem and cerebellum," according to the findings.
The 21-year-old university
gymnast was working at WingDam Saloon and Grill in Fountain City when the freak
accident happened on 1 December.
Ms Baures's boyfriend Joel
Hinke told a memorial he had hoped to marry her Witness statements indicate
she was the only person who could have pressed the food elevator's control
button on the upper floor, say police.
Investigators believe her
head was almost entirely inside the machine when it descended, before it
dragged her down.
Ms Baures died at the scene
Fountain City Police said:
"The cook, who was located in the kitchen, heard the food elevator begin
to descend to his access point on the first floor.
"He didn't hear
vocalizations of any kind. When the cab landed on the first floor he walked up
expecting to see dirty dishes and immediately recognized that a person was
trapped inside."
Ms Baures died at the scene.
The dumbwaiter has since
been permanently removed from the restaurant
The Winona Daily News
reports a distraught colleague told a 911 dispatcher: "I think one of my
co-workers got (caught) in, like, our dumbwaiter, but I’m not willing to look close
enough."
Officials say the
dumbwaiter did not have any doors, requiring operators to keep clear of the
device as it rose or descended.
The machine has since been
permanently removed.
Police said no crime had
occurred.
