The APC members were reportedly shot by unknown gunmen on their way to the flag-off of the Buhari presidential campaign at Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area or River state.
Visiting the injured members receiving
treatment at the Kesley Harrison Hospital in Port Harcourt alongside Buhari
were, Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, APC National Chairman,
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Dr.
Dakuku Peterside, and former governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige,
Punch reports.
Addressing newsmen after the
visit, Amaechi, who is also the Director General of the Buhari/Osinbajo
Campaign Organisation, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to call members of
his party (Peoples Democratic Party) to order.
Amaechi promised to provide free
medical services for the victims of the attack. He added financial support would
also be given to their families throughout the victims’ treatment in the
hospital.
Also speaking, the Rivers APC governorship
candidate, Dakuku Peterside said Jonathan can only gain the trust of Nigerians
if he publicly condemns these attacks and ensure they don’t reoccur.
Amaechi had, during the APC presidential campaign
on Tuesday, accused the PDP of being responsible for the attack on the APC
supporters.
The Rivers State Police Command had yesterday
confirmed that unidentified masked gunmen attacked APC supporters travelling to
Port Harcourt to attend the party’s presidential campaign.
