An unknown ailment continued
to spread in Ondo state; it has already claimed 28 lives within a short period according
to Premium report.
Residents of Irele
(Ode-Irele) LGA disclosed that the ailment had appeared in the area three days
ago. While health experts still cannot
find out the cause of the disease, those affected pass away within one day
after developing the symptoms.
The neurologic clinical
symptoms include blindness, and loss of consciousness.
Ebola Alert group confirmed
the death of 28 people so far. However, Dayo Adeyanju, the state health
commissioner, put the figure at 12.
Adeyanju said that the
disease was not Ebola “as it does not manifest any of its symptoms, but it
attacks the central nervous system of the victims”. The official disclosed that
the samples from the victims had been sent to Lagos for laboratory tests that would
help discover the nature of the ailment.
He also warned people
against spreading panic in social media but to report any suspicious cases to
the nearest health facilities.
Meanwhile many locals see
spiritual touch in the disease.
A journalist who pleaded
for anonymity visited the affected area and narrated afterwards:
“Community leaders said
some people broke into a shrine, and God became angry with them, striking all
those people who have hands in the act.
“Our team also saw people
performing rituals in the community. They believe that the ritual will appease
God and that the disease will end.”
In response, Kayode
Akinmade, Ondo commissioner for information, said he was not aware of any
spiritual undertone of the sickness and added:
“All I can tell you is that
medical experts are on ground, attending to victims and doing all the necessary
tests. Government is working hard to contain the disease, and I can tell you
that it is under control.”
