An indefinite strike from
today has emerges following the inability of the Osun and Oyo governments to
pay workers arrears of salaries owed.
Oyo State government is alleged to owe
its workers five months salaries, while Osun State had also been unable to pay
its workers in the last few months.
The leadership of Nigeria
Labour Congress, NLC, in Oyo State has directed all its members to begin an
indefinite strike starring from today, saying that this followed a decision
reached by the congress in line with the directive of the national secretariat
of the congress yesterday.
According to the state NLC
Chairman, Mr Waheed Olojede, “the position of the law establishing the NLC
ensures that we comply with the directive of our national leadership.”
Olojede further pointed out
that immediately a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, on the payment of the
salary arrears was signed and consultations held with the NLC national
leadership, the strike would be called off.
“Until the MoU acceptable to both
the state NLC and government is signed, sealed and delivered, the strike will
go on. We appeal to our colleagues to remain calm and peaceful in their conduct
while awaiting further directives from our national leadership.
“We urge all workers in the
employ of the state to continue to stay at home until we receive a directive
from our national leadership.”
