The call for Oyegun’s
resignation follows a closed-door meeting he held with the Senate President,
Bukola Saraki, and Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara,
yesterday, June 22, at his Abuja residence.
The ensuing crisis in the
All Progressives Congress appears to have worsened after eight governors on the
platform of the party on Tuesday, June 23, demanded for the immediate
resignation of the party’s National chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The governors, appear to be
displeased by the fact that the chairman chose to meet with Senator Saraki and
Dogara, who have been accused of carrying out a tactical coup against the
leadership of the party in an election that saw them emerge as senate president
and speaker, House of Representatives respectively.
The governors, have also
faulted Oyegun in his handling of the National Assembly election which saw the
party’s anointed candidates, Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamilla lose
out.
The governors accuse him of
complicity in the process that saw Saraki emerge as Senate President, alleging
that he collected gifts from Saraki while pretending to be on the side of the
party.
The governors, who want
Oyegun to step down include Comrade Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Tanko Al-Makura
(Nasarawa), Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun).
Others are Abubakar Sani
Bello (Niger) Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Abubuakar
Badaru (Jigawa).
Meanwhile, leaders of the
APC have endorsed Ahmed Lawan, Femi Gbajabiamila, George Akume and five others
as principal officers of the National Assembly
The party adopted the lists
submitted by The Unity Forum (Senate) and The Loyalists (House of
Representatives) to heal the wounds and reconcile all after the June 9
controversial elections.
