Matthews says he waited for
Shauna Hoare to go outside before putting on a mask and making his way to
Becky's bedroom where he tried to use the items from his car to subdue her.
The stepbrother of Bristol
schoolgirl Becky Watts told police he strangled her during a failed kidnap
attempt "to scare her and teach her a lesson".
Nathan Matthews is accused along
with his girlfriend Shauna Hoare of murdering the 16-year-old on 19 February in
what the prosecution claim was a sexually motivated attack.
It is alleged they both
then dismembered her body and hid the remains in a nearby shed.
The jury at Bristol Crown
Court was read a written statement by Matthews from 2 March where he admitted
killing Becky.
They heard before the
statement was read by police he had asked: "Do I actually have to listen
to it or can I put my fingers in my ears?"

In the statement he says he
drove to her home on 19 February with a large bag, a stun device, handcuffs,
tape and a mask, claiming: "I had developed an idea to scare Rebecca by
kidnapping her.
"I wanted to kidnap
her to scare her and teach her a lesson. I believe that she was selfish and her
behaviour towards my mother was a risk to her health."
He continued: "During
a short struggle my mask slipped and Rebecca was able to see my face.
"That caused me to
panic and I strangled her while she was partially in the bag.
"I collected the items
I had used, put them and Rebecca into the bag and zipped up the bag.
"I also took her
phone, tablet and laptop together with shoes, some clothes and a duvet cover
from the spare room in a separate bag.
"I took everything
downstairs and put it into the boot of my car."
The court heard that
Matthews claimed he drove the teenager's body back to his home in Cotton Mill
Lane and in the coming days dismembered the corpse before hiding the remains in
a nearby shed in Barton Hill.
The 28-year-old said that
his girlfriend knew nothing of his crimes or she would have reported him to
police and that his original denials "were motivated in part by a wish to
avoid the pain and disappointment these admissions would cause to my partner
and family."
Matthews, who had
previously described himself as "emotionally unstable, psychologically
disturbed, metro-sexual, Neanderthal", told police in the days following
his confession that he had come up with the idea to kidnap Becky "to make
her more appreciative of life, to be more appreciative of other people".
He alleged the plan had
been to scare her, not harm her, and that one idea involved putting her in a
bag and taking her to a wooded area where he would have told her, "You've
got to start treating people better and not be a bitch", before walking
away.
The prosecution has
previously told the jury it is a "ridiculous concept" that Shauna
Hoare, 21, was in "blissful ignorance" of Becky Watts' killing.
Matthews denies murder and
conspiracy to kidnap.
But he admits killing
Becky, perverting the course of justice, preventing the burial of a corpse and
possessing a prohibited weapon.
