At the Lagos Magistrate’s
court in Nigeria, Augustine Victor, 28 and Richard Ejiofor, 20 stole a Holy
Bible and have both been sentenced to prison.
The presiding magistrate,
Mrs J.O.E Adeyemi on Monday sentenced them to 60 days imprisonment without an
option of fine. The suspects were charged before the court for conspiracy and
stealing under the criminal code.
They were sentenced and
jailed after they were brought to court and they changed their plea to guilty
before the court.
The robbery incident took
place at Igbo-Elerin junction along Badagary express in Ojo local government
where the owner of the Bible was returning from a fellowship.
The convicts allegedly
attacked the owner, Mike John and snatched his black bag containing the Bible,
thinking that the bag contained huge sums of money.
They also forcefully took
away the victim’s BlackBerry and wrist watch, unknown to them the bag only
contained John’s Bible.
However, before they could
escape with the items, the police on patrol who saw what happened arrested them
and took them to the station where they were detained.
The items were also
recovered from them as exhibits.
At the station, they
confessed that they suspected that it was money that was in the bag and
explained that they did not intended to steal the Bible.
When the matter came up,
the prosecutor, Ishaku Babaji, during the court proceedings he explained how
the suspects were arrested by the police at Okokomaiko division.
He urged the court to
sentence them accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might want to
commit similar offence.
The court found them guilty
as charged and sentenced them accordingly.
