The group led by a former
Minister of Information, Prof Jerry Gana left, which met in Abuja late Wednesday
night, has called on the National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff, and
other members of the party’s National Working Committee to vacate office on May
21 2016.
The group known as Peoples
Democratic Party Northern Elders, said the postponement was necessary in order
to reconcile aggrieved members of the party.
It also called for the
postponement of the party’s national convention slated for that date in Port
Harcourt, Rivers State.
Some concerned PDP leaders
led by a former Niger State governor, Dr Aliyu Babangida, had earlier called
for the postponement of the convention due to observed flaws in the ongoing
congresses across the states.
The Gana group decried what
it called the level of impunity and imposition in the PDP, noting that for the
party to return to the vision of its original founders, it must purge itself of
these vices.
The PDP North Elders’ Forum
also picked holes in the proposed constitutional amendment, noting that it
violated the party’s constitution.
The PDP National Executive
Committee is meeting on Wednesday to debate the proposed constitutional
amendment.
Sheriff had proposed
various amendments to the party’s constitution, including a clause which
forbids members of the Board of Trustees of the party from meeting without the
knowledge of the national chairman.
Some members of the Forum
who attended the meeting were a former Deputy President of the Senate, Senate
Ibrahim Mantu; a former Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Waziri Maina;
Babangida, and a former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak.
Meanwhile, the Congress and
Appeal Committees set up by the national leadership of the party to conduct
congresses and attend to appeals in Adamawa State have said that the congresses
were marred by violence in the state last Saturday.
A member of Appeal
Committee, Mr. Moses Ibiyemi, who stated this while addressing journalists at
the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, on behalf of the two
committees, called for the dissolution of the state executive committee for
proper congresses to be done.
