Ekiti Workers Call-Off Strikes After Four Weeks

When journalists visited the state secretariat government activities were at lower ebb, as many of the state workers were yet to resume as at 9:30am.
Public primary school pupils were also seen returning to their various homes at about one and a half hours after getting to their school.
Civil servants in Ekiti State, yesterday resumed work after calling off their four weeks old industrial action.

The organised labour in the state had after a meeting with the government’s representatives last Friday suspended the strike embarked upon by workers on May 25, 2016 over five months salaries owed them by the state government.
The resumption was however, marred by low turnout as only few workers reported at their offices yesterday.

A civil servant, who craved anonymity, told journalists that returning of pupils may not be unconnected with a circular passed by leadership of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state.
The source, said that leadership of NUT had mandated its members not to resume duties contrary to NLC directive until reasonable amount of the salaries arrears are paid by the government.

“I heard NUT sent circular, directing their members to resume duties if only their accounts are credited.”

“Even members of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employes, (NULGE) are expected to hold a meeting today, Monday, June 27 where decision on whether to resume or not will be made,” the source added.
Some of the workers were seen in groups conducting prayer sessions at the State Secretariat headquarters.
