Durham Constabulary have
arrested the 52-year-old driver of the Arriva bus involved on suspicion of
causing death by dangerous driving.
An elderly woman has died
after a bus crashed into a Halifax bank in Darlington town centre.
Two other pedestrians who
were injured have been taken to hospital, with the Great North Air Ambulance
saying its medics had treated a woman, believed to be in her 50s, for a
"serious lower leg injury".
Eyewitnesses claimed the
bus had "jolted forward" by about 20 metres, hitting the pillar of
the Halifax branch.
Chief Inspector Graham
Milne said: "Obviously this is a tragic incident and I would like to
extend my condolences to the deceased's family."
Part of the bus had been
covered by the emergency services, as the woman who died was trapped
underneath.
A Durham Constabulary
spokesman said: "The bus left the road - we don't know why - and has
crashed into a Halifax."
Locals have described the
turning where the crash took place as a "death trap" - and said it
was the second time in 18 months that a bus had failed to make the sharp turn.
