The sad incident happened
on the northbound stretch of the A34 north of Newbury, after the East Isley
turn-off, at about 5pm.
Four people have died and several are injured after a
crash involving four cars and four lorries.
A man has been arrested on
suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is in custody.
Pictures taken of
ambulances at the scene show that the crash happened at the brow of a
hill.
One man was flown to the
John Radcliffe Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Two were taken to the Royal
Berkshire hospital with minor injuries.
Nine more people sustained
minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Inspector Andy Storey said:
"All motorists should avoid the area, use alternative routes and await
further updates before attempting to travel on this route.
"We appreciate
motorists' patience while we deal with this incident."
The northbound carriageway
of the A34, between Chieveley at J3 of the M4 and the West Ilsley junction, is
currently closed.
