Made of
polymer instead of cotton, the new notes are more durable, waterproof and can
be recycled when they reach the end of their shelf-life.
The
polymer £5 note, complete with Winston Churchill’s face, will launch on
September 13 and by May next year replace the current note bearing social
reformer Elizabeth Fry.
The new
design has already been revealed but it made a public appearance at the Bank of
England Museum today, where curators re-launched its bank note gallery.
The Bank
of England is pitching the New Fiver as stronger, cleaner and safer than the
old note.
They are
harder to counterfeit with a see-through window and a gold and silver foil.
The bank
note gallery opens on September 7 at the Bank of England Museum.
