Following revelations about a close female friend, Choi Soon-sil South Koreans gathered in the tens of thousands on Saturday in Seoul to demand president Park Geun-hye’s resignation.
Choi, seen as a Rasputin-like figure who reportedly wields immense influence over Park, was allowed to gain access to confidential information, used her connections to operate non-profit foundations as personal slush funds—and acted as a spiritual advisor of sorts to Park, among other allegations.
Choi, who is being investigated by Korean prosecutors, returned to Korea from Germany today after Park’s offices were raided by prosecutors in connection with the scandal.
