The Olugbo
had in a recent interview claimed that he was the most prominent Yoruba monarch
and that the progenitor of the race, Oduduwa, actually met his (Olugbo) people
in Ile-Ife.
The Yoruba
Obas Conflict Resolution Committee on Sunday described the four-day ultimatum
issued by the Olojudo of Ido- Osun, Oba Aderemi Adedapo, to the Olugbo of Ugbo,
Oba Fredrick Obateru, to withdraw his claim of supremacy among all Yoruba
monarchs as ridiculous and an affront to Yoruba history.
He also
claimed that he was the custodian of the authentic history of the Yoruba race
and that he had documented it in a book which had been published and accepted
by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
In a
statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Assistant General Secretary of the
committee, Oba Sunday Daodu, who is also the Oluyani of Iyani Akoko, Akoko
North-West, Ondo State, the committee faulted Oba Adedapo’s claim that the
immediate past Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, was instrumental to the
enthronement of the Olugbo, describing Oba Adedapo’s assertion as embarrassing.
The statement
questioned the position of Oba Adedapo among Yoruba obas, saying that he lacked
the mandate to issue an ultimatum against the Olugbo or speak on behalf of
Yoruba obas.
The statement
said, “It would not have been necessary to take issues with Oba Adedapo on his
recent unbridled vituperations and unwarranted affront on the Olugbo of Ugbo.
However, it is expedient that his false claims be debunked by putting the
records straight so as to avoid the various unsubstantiated comments that portray
the ignorance of the Olojudo on historical matters.
“The claim of
Oba Adedapo to be the National Secretary of the Council of Yoruba Obas in
Nigeria is news to history since there has never been such a body as the
Council of Yoruba Obas in Nigeria, and it has become necessary for us to probe
into the nefarious activities of this faceless group.”
