One of the
passengers that lot their lives in Enugu after officers of Nigerian Civil
Defense and Security Corps NCDSC, Enugu Headquarters opened fire on the bus
they were travelling in, has been buried today.
The man
identified as Frank Ikpechukwu Abodenyi was reportedly burnt to death after the
bus caught fire. According to witnesses at the scene of the incident, Mr Frank
was stuck under the burning vehicle, while other passenger escaped the scene.
According to
one Augustus Ngene, the NSCDC officials chased the commercial bus with
passengers on board from New market area as the bus driver drove up hill to
Ngwo (Milliken Hill) for an alleged violation of traffic rules.
The officers
on catching up with them, opened fire on the bus. The driver was reported to
have lost control of the bus in the process. This caused the bus to slide don
the hill with most of the passengers sustaining serious level of injury.
Unfortunately
Mr Ikpechukwu, who was reported to be a young peaceful graduate got burnt to
death. Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Danmallam. Danmallam, who
later arrived at the scene mentioned that investigation has already commenced
into the case and the suspects have been arrested.
He said, “This type of
thing should not be allowed; we have made arrests. Investigations have started
and we are asking people who witnessed what happened to come forward to make
statements.
“We assure you that nobody
involved would be allowed to go scot-free. This is not the type of case that
can be swept under the carpet.
“I learnt that the NSCDC
officials were chasing the bus; but I don’t know for what offence.
“I want to assure the
people that nobody is above the law. Whoever breaks the law of the land will
face the consequence.”
The deceased has been
buried today at his hometown in Nsukka area of Enugu state. May his soul rest
in peace.
