The special adviser to
President Muhammadu Buhari on the Niger Delta, Charles Quaker Dokubo, has
solicited the support of leaders in the oil rich region to ensure the
president’s re-election in 2019 general elections.
Daily Trust reports that
Dokubo, who is also the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme
(PAP), called on all the people of the Niger Delta to ensure that the current
peace enjoyed in the region is maintained.
He made this known during a
visit to a Niger Delta activist and peace advocate, Chief Mike Ekayama Loyibo.
He said the region had a
lot to benefit from the current peace and the president’s re-election in 2019.
Dokubo, in a statement in
Abuja, said the Presidential Amnesty Programme was at a critical stage and
needed the support of all patriotic and peace-loving Niger Deltans for it to
achieve the desired results.
President Buhari announced
that he would seek re-election in the 2019 presidential election.
The development was made
public by the president's personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmed.
Ahmad took to his Twitter
handle, @BashirAhmaad, to announce the development on Monday, April 9.
He further disclosed that
the president made the announcement during the National Executive Committee
(NEC) meeting of the APC.
In a related development,
President Buhari urged his supporters to stop campaigning for his re-election
in the 2019 presidential elections.
The president noted that
some zealous supporters have been engaging in what could be interpreted as
campaigns even months before the INEC is due to lift the embargo on such.
In a statement signed by
his media aide Femi Adesina, Buhari pleaded with his supporters to be patient
and not let them be seen as breaking the law.
