The Nigerian Air Force
(NAF) on Friday, February 16, had set the record straight following
misconceptions that the first indigenous operational Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
(UAV) known as TSAIGUMI was launched by former President Goodluck Jonathan in
2013.
Two persons have been
arrested for flying a drone over the house of a former governor of Ogun state,
Aremo Olusegun Osoba, located within Ibara Government Reserved Area (GRA)
Abeokuta, Ogun.
The development was
revealed by one of Osoba's aides, Adekunle Adeyemi, a in a statement made
available to newsmen, Punch reports.
According to Adeyemi, the
two suspects, a lady and a young man, whose identities were not disclosed, were
allegedly caught by the private security guards attached to Osoba’s residence.
They reportedly flew the
drone to monitor activities in within the premises. The aide stated that the
drone was later shot down by Osoba’s security operatives, adding that when the
suspects were arrested, their explanations for the act were incoherent.

Referring to the action as
a breach of Osoba’s security and privacy, Adeyemi said that a few years ago,
some persons invaded a part of the same building and dug out buried armoured
cables.
He further disclosed that
the ex-governor just returned from a trip to the United Kingdom on Tuesday and
was in his Abeokuta home in preparation for a meeting to discuss a hitch-free
conduct of the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC)
scheduled for Friday, September 28.
In his statement, Adeyemi
said: “This will be another breach of security of Chief Osoba’s private
security. A few years ago, unidentified persons invaded part of the compound
and took reasonable time to dig out buried armored cables. This was done in
most professional manner.
“It will also be recalled
that sometime ago, two bungalows on the premises were vandalised by
unidentified hoodlums. Another breach was when insulting graffiti were written
round the fence of Chief Osoba’s house, not too long ago.
“Those involved in the
latest action have been handed over to an arm of government agencies for
investigations.”
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state
police public relations officer, when contacted, said that he was not aware of
the arrest. Oyeyemi said: “I am not aware of such arrest.”
NAF in a statement by Air
Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, director of public relations and information
Nigerian Air Force sent to NAIJ.com, said the GULMA UAV was indeed the NAF’s
first indigenous UAV, while the TSAIGUMI UAV was the first indigenous
operational UAV.
