The Southern and Middle
Belt Leaders Forum has expressed fear over the possible conduct of the 2019
general elections saying what happened in Osun state does not provide
confidence.
The Guardian reports that
the forum comprising South west, South-South, Southeast and Middle Belt
leaders, in a statement on Thursday, October 4 said the rerun election in Osun
state raises concern.
They said the chances of
Nigeria having free, fair and credible election in the general elections remain
slim.
He said: “That the
election, which should have been concluded at the first ballot, was forced into
a contrived inconclusive mode, to perpetrate one of the worst malfeasance in
electoral contest in recent time, is practical demonstration of President
Muhammadu Buhari’s slip months back that he was still shocked that former President
Goodluck Jonathan conceded to him in 2015.”
“The apparent complicity of
the security agencies in the supplementary election seriously undermines the
commitment of the Federal Government under the ruling party, All People
Congress (APC) to ensure that the 2019 General Elections will be free fair and
credible and above all respect and guarantee the independence of INEC.”
They called on the
international community to “engage all stakeholders and to work with all
political parties across the board to ensure that the government of Nigeria
does not stand on the way of a smooth electoral process in 2019.”
Meanwhile, the Kwankwaso
led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted claims that the
party’s primary election conducted in Kano state has been cancelled.
Vanguard reports that the
faction has insisted that there was no reason to cancel the election which was
conducted according to the constitutional provisions of the party.
“We declared the date and
the venue for the elections as provided by the party’s constitution only to get
there and find it sealed by the police without any reason,” Hajiya Binta
Spikin, the spokesperson for the faction said.
