IN its bid to ensure that would-be migrants are not falling victim to human traffickers, the Migration Enlightenment Project Nigeria (MEPN) is currently carrying out a campaign to sensitise youths on the risks and dangers of irregular migration in Nigeria.
The group noted that human trafficking, run by criminal networks, continues to be the main driver of irregular emigration in Nigeria.
In view of thousands of Nigerians stranded in various transit and destination countries where they’re exposed to human rights abuses, the group advised would-be migrants to always check for the background information on the agency or persons offering them assistance in securing a visa, among other things in travelling abroad.
“The time has come to put an end to the unnecessary deaths and suffering of young Nigerians as a result of irregular migration. Don’t leave Nigeria without a genuine visa for the country of destination,” the group added.
In a release signed by the Co-Project Director of MEPN and Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE), Messrs Kenneth Gbandi and Femi Awoniyi respectively, said would-be migrants should note that victims of human trafficking are exposed to physical, psychological and s3xual violence, adding that these risks can only be avoided by legal migration and by maintaining a legal status abroad.
They said that the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) disclosed that over 2,000 people, many of whom are Nigerians, have drowned in the Mediterranean so far this year, and many have died in transit while crossing the Sahara Desert or in Libya.
