A request by Senator Dino
Melaye for police to leave his residence has been turned down by a federal high
court in Abuja.
Melaye, senator
representing Kogi West has been accused by police of attempted murder on police
sergeant, Danjuma Saliu in Kogi state.
A siege was laid by the
police at the Abuja residence of Melaye, which they say will continue until the
senator surrenders, arrested and
investigated.
Melaye had asked the court
via an application seeking the enforcement of his fundamental human rights.
In the ex-parte motion
filed through his lawyer on Thursday, Melaye said that the siege on his
residence is a threat to his life and asked the court to order the policemen
out of his residence.
The presiding judge, N.
Maha ruled that the human rights enforcement suit should be given accelerated
hearing, while refusing the motion that the siege on his residence should be
stopped.
