The former governor of Oyo state and gubernatorial candidate of African Democratic Party (ADP) for 2019 general elections, Adebayo Alao-Akala, said the opposition parties in the state would team up to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There are indications that palpable fear of an alliance against the Oyo state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) by opposition parties is causing sleepless nights for many candidates of the ruling ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Legit.ng regional reporter, Newman Babson, reports that chieftains of the opposition parties took the decision during the week in order to check mate the alleged violence being sponsored by the ruling party in the state.
It was gathered that the APC supporters were alleged to have disrupted the campaigns of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Ojoo area of Ibadan last week.
Three people were also reported to have been killed at Igbo Ora, the capital of Ibarapa central, during a clash between supporters of APC and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The governorship candidate of PDP, Seyi Makinde, recently called on the state police command to intensify efforts towards curbing thuggery in the state, adding that the trend should not be allowed during the general elections.
The APC has, however, denied being behind hooliganism in the state, saying that the candidates of opposition parties were only calling dogs a bad name in order to hang it.
The gubernatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Adebayo Adelabu, declared that no amount of alliance or merger by the opposition political parties in the state would stop his victory in the election billed to take place on Saturday, March 2.
Adelabu made this declaration in a statement by his aide, Bayo Busari, a copy which was made available to Legit.ng on Tuesday, February 12, in Ibadan, the state capital.
It would be recalled that major opposition parties in the state on Monday, February 11, declared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is jittery of imminent defeat it would suffer in the elections, promised work together as one team to defeat all candidates of the ruling party in the elections.
The political parties include African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Alliance for Democracy (AD), said recent events have shown the APC to be jittery of the imminent loss staring it in the face.
The opposition parties, in a statement issued under the platform of forum of director's general of campaign organisations of various opposition political parties in Oyo state, alleged that series of attacks on opposition parties being perpetrated by agents of the state government in power are becoming worrisome and can no longer be tolerated.
Adelabu while reacting declared that "a merger, as being proposed among the opposition candidates cannot stop his emergence as the next governor of the state."
Busari in the statement said that it was unfortunate that opposition candidates were busy beating around the bush when Adelabu was traversing the nooks and crannies of the state.
He said: “We make bold to say that while members of the opposition in the state were engaging in discussing the person of chief Adelabu, he has been busy engaging interest groups and the people of the state, intimating them with the major policies that his government was going to embark on immediately he is sworn in, to make live more meaningful for them.
“Members of the opposition, having seen the writing clearly on the wall, have now gone into the panic mode, tinkering with an idea of aligning to confront chief Adelabu.
“Their move is belated as it is coming when the good people of Oyo state have taken a decision to have the APC candidate as the next governor of the state", he said.
