The Nigeria Labour
Congress, NLC has commenced a nationwide protest over the leadership tussle at
the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) board.
The nationwide protest, which
kicked off 9 am on Monday May 13 at the Labour house in the Nigerian capital,
Abuja with members of affiliated unions in attendance, Premium Times reports.
The union is protesting
over the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige’s unwillingness to inaugurate the
NSITF board.
Speaking at the protest,
the national president of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said they are protesting the attack
on Nigerian workers during a procession to Ngige’s private residence in
Asokoro, Abuja.
“Members of International
Labour Congress in Geneva will be protesting against Ngige on June 18,” he
said.
The NLC had earlier called
on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe Ngige over his involvement in the
affairs of the NSITF.
Wabba had also said the
protest is not against the inauguration of the board but against the manner in
which the minister superintended the affairs of the labour sector.
On Wednesday, last week,
NLC members had staged a protest on the street where Ngige’s house is located,
using two petrol tankers to barricade his residence, Cable NG reports.
During the process,
suspected thugs broke lose, attacking anyone in sight, including journalists.
Ayuba Wabba, NLC president
and Eniredonana Williams, his NUPENG counterpart, who led the protesters,
alleged that the thugs were mobilised to rough handle any labour member found
within the area or the minister’s residence.
