Nigeria's Super Eagles
wrapped up their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt with a 1-0
victory over Tunisia at the Cairo International Stadium. Coach Gernot Rohr's
men got
the game off to a bright start in the early minutes of the game after
Odion Oghalo handed his side the lead in the 3rd minute of the match. The
striker tapped in the ball from a goal mouth scramble from the Tunisian danger
zone after Jamilu Collins made a run into the opponent's defence from the left
flank.
However, the Carthage
Eagles made several attempts to get at least a goal to stretch the game into
extra time but the Super Eagles were decent enough to defend their lone strike.
On the stroke of half time, Ighalo suffered a hamstring injury and he was
escorted into the dressing room as he was unable to continue the game. And
former Golden Eaglets striker Victor Osimhen was handed his AFCON debut by the
coach but the attacker also failed to make impact in the game.
Meanwhile, Ighalo could
however emerged golden boot winner after scoring five goals at the 32nd edition
of the championship. This is Nigeria's eighth bronze medal having finished
third in 1976, 78, '92, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019.
Algeria coach Djamel
Belmadi has explained that the plan they had for the Super Eagles in the AFCON
2019 semifinal worked for them. Nigeria's Super Eagles suffered heartbreaking
2-1 defeat against Algeria on Sunday, July 14, in which Manchester City striker
Riyad Mahrez scored the winner in additional time. Belmadi has now revealed
that his side knew Nigeria used Ahmed Musa and Samuel Chukwueze directly with
lot of pace and had to block them.
