The death of the two men
and Luke Freeman are the latest in a string of fatal Brit balcony falls in the
popular Spanish and Greek beach resorts in recent years.
These are the first
pictures of the British tourists who died after a 30ft fall as they tried to
take a selfie on Spain’s Costa Blanca.
Daniel Vivian Mee, 25, and
Jayden Dolman, 20, had been posing for a photo about 7.30pm last night in an
area known as Punta Prima near the town of Torrevieja when they fell.
Local reports, citing Civil
Guard sources, described the pair as British and confirmed they had been trying
to take a photo at the time.
A third holidaymaker was
with them, but he escaped unharmed.
Daniel died at the scene,
having landed on a hut used by lifeguards.
Meanwhile Jayden was
airlifted to Alicante Hospital with serious injuries. But he was said to have
died today in the intensive care war.
A well-placed Civil Guard
sources said the information they had been given was that all three men were
British.
The source said: “The local
British consulate has been informed.
“It appears the men were
taking a photo. The initial reports were that they had fallen from a height of
around 40 feet.
“It is too early at this
stage to speculate on exactly what happened and the police investigation into
the cause is still in its infancy.”
Another source added:
“Officers will be speaking to the man taken to Torrevieja Hospital as soon as
possible to try to build up a better picture of what occurred.”
Punta Prima is the headland
marking the border between the municipalities of Orihuela and Torrevieja.
Its beach won the
prestigious Ecoplaya award in 2010.
The tragedy occurred less
than three days after Luke Freeman, 19, from Reading, Berks, died after
plunging from holiday apartments in the Costa Brava resort of Lloret de Mar.
No-one from the Civil Guard
was immediately available for comment early this morning.
The injured man was
airlifted to Alicante Hospital. The extent of his injuries has not been
revealed.
An autopsy will take place
later today at Alicante’s Institute of Forensic Medicine.
Local reports said the
tragedy occurred on a cliff where there is a well-maintained barrier designed
to stop these types of incidents from happening.
The spot where the men fell
is near a set of steps and a lift leading to Punta Prima beach.
