Runaway Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani is now in the United Arab Emirates, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has confirmed.
In a statement, the ministry said Ghani
and his family were welcomed into the country on humanitarian grounds.
The UAE statement cleared the
controversy over the whereabouts of Ghani.
Initial reports said he escaped to
Tajikistan on the eve of Taliban’s arrival in Kabul.
Then, another report said he was seeking
refuge in Uzbekistan.
The Russians added a completely new
dimension to the uncertainties.
An official said Ghani escaped with four cars and a helicopter loaded with cash, with some being left on the tarmac.
