Abducted Zamfara State Student Regain Freedom

Students kidnapped at the Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Wednesday, Sept 1 have regained their freedom.

“The seventy-five students of Government Day Secondary School Kaya in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State abducted about two weeks ago regain freedom, NTA wrote.

After the abduction of the students in Zamfara on Wednesday, the state police command who confirmed the abduction, revealed that some of the abducted students were released that day.

The spate of school abduction in the country has been alarming, especially in the North-East and North Central.

The Zamfara students abduction led the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to raise the alarm over the incessant attack on schools in the region.

UNICE noted that attacks on schools and abduction of learners are a gross violation of children’s rights.

The United Nation’s body stated that the abductions could have long-lasting effects on the mental health and overall well-being of abducted students.

UNICEF stated that schools must be safe and that no child should experience any harm because they went to school, and that no parent should come to grief for sending their children to learn.

Details around the release of the abducted Zamfara students are not clear yet and it remains unknown if any ransom was paid before they were released.
