Lady Beaten To Death Autopsy Report Shows She Drowned - Police

A young lady identified as Chinyere Awuda was allegedly beaten to death by fun seekers in a club inside Cosmila Hotel in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the lady who hails from Nnobi, in Idemmili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, was beaten to death for allegedly stealing bundles of cash being sprayed on a birthday celebrant.

Her body was found in the swimming pool of the hotel on Sunday morning, July 16, 2023, where she was dumped after being lynched by a popular clubber, and his friends.

One of the clubbers accused her of picking money which the fun seekers were spraying on their friend who was a birthday celebrant.

A regular clubber at Cosmila Hotel told reporters that: “Some of these girls just dress up and come to the club and begin to pick money. While you’re spraying your friends, these girls will just be picking and pocketing them. Because men are already drunk in clubs, the girls get away with the money. I was not in the club last weekend, but I heard that the girl went for money that someone kept by his seat side, which he was getting prepared to go and spray. That was what happened,”

It was gathered that despite efforts made by other people in the club to rescue the girl, they continued to beat and molest her.

She was later dragged outside the club, and her lifeless body was dumped into the hotel’s swimming pool.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, said the birthday celebrant and his friends have been arrested while the case is being investigated.

“Contrary to what people are saying about the complicity of Cosmila Hotel, we were assisted by the management of the hotel, to arrest the suspects. Investigation is still ongoing,” the PPRO added.

"Some others said she did not only pick money but went for bundles of money, which a clubber stacked by his seat side, waiting to spray on the celebrant,” a source told the publication.

The Anambra state police command has said that investigations carried out so far, show that the young lady identified as Chinyere Awuda who died in a club inside Cosmila Hotel in Awka, the Anambra State capital last weekend, drowned in the swimming pool where her body was found on July 17.

It was alleged that Ms Awuda was beaten to death by some fun seekers at the hotel who accused her of stealing money sprayed on someone at the hotel who was celebrating a birthday anniversary.

However, a statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, says the pathologist that carried out an autopsy on Ms. Awuda's body did not find any trauma marks on her to indicate that she was beaten to death. Ikenga added that the autopsy indicated that Ms. Awuda died from drowning.

’On 17th July 2023, the body of a young lady later identified as Miss Chinyere Awuda was found in an abandoned swimming pool within the premises of Cosmila Hotel located at No.10 Cosmila Close, off old INEC  road by Regina Caeli Junction, Awka.

It was alleged that the deceased was beaten to death by some persons who had an event at the hotel the previous night.  She was accused of pilfering some of the Naira Notes allegedly sprayed on the celebrant.

In the course of the Police investigation, the celebrant was arrested for questioning while the corpse was recovered and deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

Contrary to claims that the deceased was beaten to death, the pathologist found no sign of trauma on the body.

The autopsy report indicated that Drowning was the cause of death.

This finding was in tandem with claims that the lady ran away when accosted and every effort made to find her that night was futile.

It would appear that she fell into the abandoned swimming pool and drowned.

Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, *CP Aderemi Adeoye* has directed that the case file be forwarded to the Attorney General for vetting and legal advice.

Any further development will be communicated to the public in due course, please.''
