The latest episode of The Walking Dead
has chewed its way through two viewing records on US television.
Last Sunday's show set a series record with 12.3
million viewers.Nielsen Media Research, a firm that measures TV, radio and cinema audiences, said it beat the series' previous record of 10.9 million for its third season debut last October.
Meanwhile, more than half of Sunday's viewers - 7.7 million people - were in the demographic group of people aged 18 to 49.
Nielsen said a cable series had never before reached that big an audience in that age group.
The figure is impressive by regular television broadcast standards too.
While US military crime show NCIS was the most popular drama on air with 22 million viewers the previous week, fewer than five million of those viewers were under 50.
The Walking Dead stars British actor Andrew Lincoln as sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes, who leads a group of survivors in a world dominated by flesh-eating "walkers".
Season 3 features fellow UK star David Morrissey, who plays The Governor, the ruthless leader of a rival group of survivors.
Morrissey admitted this was not the first time he had played a brooding character.
He said: "I'm 6ft 3in, I'm from the north of England and there is a gruffness to me, I guess.
"I'm a miserable b*****d! But it's your job as an actor to mess around with that."
He said his wife, novelist Esther Freud, could not watch his new show.
"She watched my first episode (of The Walking Dead) and no more. I wouldn't expect her to.
"When she saw Carry On Screaming! as a child, she thought it was a genuine horror film and had nightmares.
"She doesn't have that 'it's just a film' filter - which is what I love about her."
