Dozens of
people were attending the gathering in the city of East Peoria on Saturday
night when James Moore, 40, walked in at about 7.45pm and opened fire, said
police.
The
couple were shot once each in the head
Lance
Griffel, 36, and Lori Moore, 33, suffered one fatal gunshot wound each to the
head at the Fifth Quarter Sports Bar and Pizzeria, said the county coroner.
An FBI
agent drew his own concealed weapon and killed Moore with a gunshot to the
head.
Peoria
County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told Sky News the attacker was pronounced dead
at the scene.
Ms Moore
was pronounced dead in an emergency room at 9.16pm and Mr Griffel in the same
hospital at 9.39pm, she added.
Court
records show that Ms Moore divorced her husband in May 2013.
East
Peoria Police Chief Dick Ganschow praised the FBI officer's swift reaction.
More than
100 people witnessed the incident at the bar
He told
Sky News: "He's a local agent who just happened to stop by the bar and had
only been there a very short time before the suspect entered the bar.
"He
reacted very quickly and we're very fortunate that he was there.
"We
don't have anything to suggest the suspect intended to kill anyone else. This
was a very volatile situation and we don't know what his mind set was, but
fortunately thanks to this agent's quick reactions we didn't wait to answer
that question."
He said
they were interviewing more than 100 witnesses to the incident.
FBI
spokesman Brad Ware told Sky News the agency was coordinating with state police
on an investigation into the matter.
