The U.S. authorities think
that increase in the number of Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria might be connected
with the upcoming elections in the country.
The spokesperson for the
U.S. State Department, Marie Harf, made a claim January 14, Wednesday, adding
however that despite this, the polls should be held.
According to Premium Times,
Harf said as she briefed newsmen:
“There has been a sharp
escalation in the number of reported casualties. We do believe the election is
a factor.”
The official also noted
that the insurgents had previously resorted to this tactics to stir up
tensions.
“Boko Haram has tended to,
particularly around something like an election, use political issues or
sensitivities to try to enflame tensions.
“We have seen that as one
of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the
election, because we believe it is important.”
It should be noted that in
the recent period the insurgents have seized Baga, Borno State, and have
attacked several towns in the North-East.
Hours ago it was reported
that the militants invaded the strategic town of Biu, but were repelled by the
Nigerian troops.

Definately connected, no doubt
