Portugal 1 – Iran 1
Iran are out of the 2018
World Cup.
The Persians were sent
packing from Russia are a thrilling 1-1 draw with Portugal on Tuesday night.
Iran finished the World Cup
with one win, one draw and one defeat. They are leaving Russia with their heads
held high.
Many believe that Iran were
robbed against the European champions.
A stunning
outside-of-the-boot strike from Ricardo Quaresma gave Portugal the lead. But
Iran levelled with an injury time penalty converted by Karim Ansarifard.
As for Cristiano Ronaldo,
he saw a second half penalty saved by the Iranian goalie.
And should Ronaldo have
been sent off? The Real Madrid star was booked for elbowing Iran’s Morteza
Pouraliganji in the face.
That booking only came
after a review from VAR.
Carlos Queiroz: Why
Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t sent off
After the match, Portuguese
national and Iranian coach Carlos Queiroz vented about the Cristiano Ronaldo
booking.
For Queiroz, who worked
with Ronaldo at Manchester United, the Portugal star should have been sent off.
There is only one reason
why Ronaldo stayed on the pitch, argued Queiroz. The ref bottled it as
Ronaldo’s status took over. Queiroz said:
It is an elbow and if there
is an elbow it is a red card.
The rules don’t say if it
is [Lionel] Messi or Ronaldo it is only a little bit of an elbow. It is a red
card. How can he give a yellow for an elbow? What is the difference in an elbow
made by Ronaldo or someone else? The VAR washes his hands like [Pontius]
Pilate.
Everyone agrees that VAR is
not going well. The only countries that do not complain are Portugal and Spain.
After exiting the World
Cup, Queiroz is expected to step down as the Iran coach.
As for Portugal, they will
take on Uruguay in the last 16.
