Nigeria High Commission In London Lays Off Over 50 Staff

A report by Vanguard indicates that over 50 staff of the Nigerian High Commison in London have been dismissed.
According to the report, the staff were dismissed and asked to accept a letter dated Thursday, November 23.
Before now, staff of the commission have reportedly been working all year (2018) with months of no pay, while the letter of termination came due to continual outcry from staff members of the commission demanding their salary arrears.

In the letter signed by one Helen Nzeako on behalf of the Nigerian High Commission UK, she said the termination of employment is as a result of restructuring of the organization and due to budgetary constraints.

The dismissed staff members of the commission however say the plot by the management to disengage them was to pave way to employ their friends and family members into their positions.

The letter of termination, however, instructed staff to reapply for the same job if they so wish.
“We want the world to see how we are been ill-treated just because we asked for our salaries. This is so unfair and an injustice to democratic rule,” a displaced staff of the commission was quoted as saying in the report.

The aggrieved staff also called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the federal government to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, a former secretary of state for international development in the United Kingdom, Priti Patel, has warned foreign investors to be wary about investing in Nigeria.

Patel in an opinion piece, stated specifically that the Nigerian government has disrespect for international law and convention, and court decisions.
