The Jigawa State High court
4 sitting in Dutse has sentenced a 39-year-old man, Datti Buba of Giade in
Bauchi State to death by hanging for allegedly kidnapping and killing two boys
in Jigawa.
The presiding judge,
Justice Ubale Ahmed Taura said the suspect was arrested on a three-count charge
of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping and culpable homicide.
The suspect admitted before
the court that he and two others, Adamu Sabo and Usman Idrith of Tafawa -Balewa
in Bauchi State committed the offences.
He said the offences
contradict sections 97, 221, and 273 of the penal code.
Justice Taura has sentenced
Datti Buba to five years imprisonment for the offence of criminal conspiracy
and ten-year imprisonment for Kidnapping and was also sentenced to death by
hanging for culpable homicide.
The two other suspects who
were arrested for allegedly having hand in the kidnapping and killing of
innocent boys were discharged for lack of evidence to justify Datti Buba’s
claim that they committed the offence together.
Speaking with DAILY POST
after the court ruling, the convict Datti Buba said he and his colleagues from
Taraba kidnapped the boys and request the ransom of five million Naira.
He said they decided to
kill their victims for their relative’s failure to provide the amount they
demanded as ransom and in good time.
Datti said the victims’
relatives were able to raise only N3,350m and they decided to kill them after
collecting the ransom.
He said out of the money
collected, he only benefited ten thousand Naira only because his colleagues
fled to Taraba immediately after collecting the ransom.
DAILY POST reported last
year that men of the Police command in Jigawa State had arrested a gang leader
of a kidnap syndicate identified as Buba, who was for long on the wanted list
in state.
The Police Public
Relations Officer (PPRO) Jigawa state command, SP Abdul Jinjiri, in a statement
made available to newsmen, said: “the suspect was in the police wanted list
early last year.”
Jinjiri added that Buba was
declared wanted after he allegedly conspired with eight others and kidnapped
two persons in Kafin Madaki of Gwaram Local Government of the State.
The suspect was a gang
leader of a criminal syndicate terrorizing some villages in Gwaram Local
Government and neighbouring villages in Bauchi State.
