Gomez’s injury struggles
Joe Gomez had a pretty
bright start to the 2018/19 campaign.
The young defender was
forming a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk, playing 13 of Liverpool’s 15
opening Premier League games of the season.
However, Gomez’s season was
derailed on December 5th 2018 when he injured himself 23 minutes into
Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Burnley.
The 21-year-old then had to
undergo ankle surgery, causing him to miss a large chunk of the season.
Gomez would eventually make
his league return on the 21st of April vs Cardiff but he would not manage more
than six minutes in any Premier League outing before the season was over.
The young defender has
since opened up on dealing with such an injury:
“It’s probably
underestimated a bit how much it can affect us as footballers.
“Like it might just seem
that you’re injured and now you just watch the boys, but it hurts – especially
(in) a year like this that was pretty historic.
“To watch a large majority
of those games, having had a taste of it at the beginning, was difficult to
take. Obviously it was nice to overcome it and get a bit of involvement at the
end.
“We’ve just got to move on
now and we’ve got a big game. There’s a lot of ups and downs, but it’s all a
learning curve.”As quoted by the Evening Standard.
Liverpool vs Tottenham
Gomez was also injured for
Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final vs Real Madrid.
Happily for him now though,
he should be fit to feature in this year’s final vs Tottenham.
It will be the first time
an English side has won the trophy since Chelsea in 2012.
Also, given the season
Jurgen Klopp’s side have had, they will really want to lift this trophy as
playing so well all year and not winning a thing does seem a bit harsh.
