US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday there were no American casualties in the Iranian strikes on military bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq and that Tehran appeared to be standing down.
This debunked Iranian claims that 80 US soldiers were killed in the missile strikes on the US bases in Al Asad and Erbil.
“No Americans were harmed in last night’s attack by the Iranian regime. We suffered no casualties,” Trump said in a White House address just after noon, Washington D.C. time.
“All of our soldiers are safe and only minimal damage was sustained at our military bases,” Trump said.
“Our great American forces are prepared for anything. Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world. No American or Iraqi lives were lost because of the precautions taken, the dispersal of forces and an early warning system that worked very well, ”Trump said.
Trump opened his speech by saying that as long as he remains US President, Iran will not be allowed to have a nuke. He then went to blame his predecessors, especially Barack Obama for providing the resources Iran used to build weapons and sponsor terrorism in the Middle East.
Trump’s full speech:
Preamble:
As long as I’m president of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.
Good morning.
