Report has shown that about 4,000 leprosy cases are detected in Nigeria annually.
The report presented by the Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) has it the scourge has led to a grade 2 disability, in which 12 per cent of children are affected and 10 per cent experience deformities as a result of unawareness.
National Director of the mission, Dr Sunday Udoh, made the presentation on Wednesday in Abuja, during a one-day sensitisation workshop on the rights of persons affected by leprosy.
Dr Sunday said the ailment was prevalent in all states of the federation and victims most times face different degrees of discrimination.
He noted that the disease was rampant in Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Benue and Kebbi states.
Udoh warned individuals against stigmatisation of leprosy patients, as they should be treated equally.
Despite the recent United Nations’ (UN) resolution, part of which was to stop discrimination against persons affected by leprosy, Udoh said stigmatisation remained a major concern for victims.
“About 4000 leprosy cases are detected yearly; 12 per cent are children, with more than 10 per cent having deformities.
“TLMN ensures these people avoid a prolonged struggle with the disease, including disability, poverty and social exclusion.
“Leprosy is highly stigmatising, a fear of infection and lack of awareness cause discrimination against persons affected by leprosy,” he said.
