25 Okada Riders Sentence To Jail

No fewer than 25 commercial motorcyclists, popularly called okada riders, have been sentenced to jail without option of fines by mobile courts inaugurated by the Federal Capital Territory Administration in Abuja.
The Okada riders were convicted by the Special Task Team for violating environmental laws, this is according to Punch newspaper report.
Disclosing this on Monday in Abuja was the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, adding that the task team had prosecuted 41 offenders at the mobile courts.
The minister added that: “Four persons were discharged, while cases involving other offenders are ongoing. The team arrested 492 commercial sex workers and 128 miscreants as well as 17 mentally-ill persons.”
Mohammed also directed the security agencies to deploy personnel to enforce compliance with the usage of the pedestrian overhead bridges in areas 1 and 3 Garki, Kubwa, Lugbe and Dei-Dei.
He warned that anyone found crossing the highways instead of using pedestrian bridges would face the wrath of the law.
On his part, the head of the task team, who is the Police Commissioner in FCT, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, called for the review of the fines and penalties in the Abuja Environmental Protection Board laws.
He advised the the area councils to enact bye-laws with severe penalties to complement the AEPB Act.
