The Nigerian Ports
Authority, NPA, has announced that sixty-one ships laden with containers, foods
and petroleum products are expected in Lagos ports from 8-28 December, 2014.
The NPA made the
announcement in its daily publication, “Shipping Position”, made available to
newsmen in Lagos on December 8, 2014, Monday.
The document showed that 10
ships were expected to arrive with petroleum products like petrol, diesel,
kerosene and aviation fuel.
This is coming at a time
when queues for petroleum are already being witnessed at various filling
stations in Lagos and other parts of the country.
According to reports, the
scarcity of petroleum products is not unconnected to the threat made by
Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) to
embark on a three-day warning strike in protest against the delay in the
passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and other anti-labour activities
of employers in the oil and gas sector.
The NPA statement also
disclosed that eight of the ships would arrive with fresh fish, while 21 others
have containers of different goods.
The document showed that
five ships containing buckwheat were also being expected, while the remaining
17 ships would arrive with bulk rice, used vehicles, bulk fertiliser, base oil
and general cargo.
It stated that five ships
had arrived and waiting to berth with bulk rice, buck wheat, bulk sugar and
bulk fertilizer.
The document indicated that
nine other ships were also waiting to discharge petroleum products such as
petrol, diesel, kerosene, crude palm oil and base oil.
According to the document,
22 other ships are discharging cargoes like buckwheat, ethanol, bulk rice,
fertiliser, general cargo, containers, bulk of sugar and petroleum products.
