Niger’s army spokesman,
Col. Ledru Mustapha said: “We had two soldiers killed yesterday in a
remote-controlled explosion. We took up the chase and killed the two militants
responsible for the attack near a bridge over the Kamadougou River.”
This is the first time
Niger’s army has reported being attacked with a remote-controlled bomb since it
launched a campaign with Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria this year against the
Islamist sect.
The Boko Haram terrorist
group has killed thousands in its bid to set up an Islamist state in the
northeast region of Nigeria.
In recent months, it has
launched a series of cross-border attacks on Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
Following such attacks,
these neighbouring countries had to join forces with Nigeria to rout the
insurgents and ever since they joined forces, the military has recovered most
of the territories captured by Boko Haram.
Some days back, Boko Haram
reportedly attacked an island of Niger, killing many.
Cameroonian soldiers had
expressed worry that the number of Boko Haram terrorists keep increasing even
though they have killed plenty of them.
