The suspect had reportedly gagged the girl, tied her hands behind her, left her in a room and went to her place of work. She is an attendant at a petrol station in the town.
It was noises made by the
baby that attracted some passers-by, who reported to the police in the town.
When the policemen were
alerted, they reportedly raced to the scene and forced open the door.
According to an eyewitness,
the police immediately rescued the baby and rushed her to a hospital.
The suspect was
subsequently arrested and transferred to Police Zonal Headquarters in Abeokuta
for further investigation.
It was learned that the
biological mother of the victim was said to be mentally deranged, which reportedly
prompted the decision of the father to put the baby in care of the step-mother.
The suspect, who has a one-
year-old baby, confessed to the crime, saying she acted in that manner because
her husband was paying too much attention to the step-daughter than her.
When contacted, the state
Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding
that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
He said it was a criminal
offence that should not be swept under the carpet.
Adejobi said: “Everybody is
surprised over the action of the woman. How can you beat your step-daughter
into coma, gag and tie her hands. It is not only barbaric, it is criminal. The
woman would be charged to court.”
He called on parents, whose
children live with relatives, to ensure adequate monitoring.
